Guidestar UK, The Government backed online charity information resource, is offering charities an exclusive preview throughout September prior to its expected launch in the autumn.
GuideStar UK has written to all 167,000 charities featured on the website giving them each a unique password that will allow them to view their entry and add to it. The letters with the passwords have gone to the named charity correspondent on the Charity Commission's public register of charities, and are due to arrive during the first week of September.
Password holders will see information about their charity's activities and finances, extracted verbatim from documents filed with the Charity Commission. They will also find an electronic guide that will show them how to add logos, links, information about achievements and future campaigns, newsletters and press releases.
Erica Roberts, GuideStar UK's chief executive, confirmed that it wasn't obligatory to view the details. "It is an opportunity for charities that want to make the best of this new resource to add more information, quickly, easily, and for free," she said. Roberts estimates there will be 1.6 million visitors to the GuideStar UK website in its first year, including donors and trusts, the Government and researchers, but most of all charities and their beneficiaries.
