Finding a happy union

Trade unions which represent workers in the voluntary sector have launched a new charter of rights for people working in such organisations. As charities take on increased public service delivery the unions want to make sure that those people involved in actually delivering the services are properly represented 'in this new and pressurised environment'.

To coincide with the launch, the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G), which has a growing membership in the voluntary sector through its ACTS section, has produced a campaign pack called Valuing the Voluntary Sector - Quality Conditions for Quality Services.

Jennie Formby, T&G national secretary for ACTS, said that as the government puts more and more pressure on local authorities to involve the voluntary sector in delivering local services, the public have a right to expect minimum standards of service and professionalism. "The voluntary sector must be considered a quality option not a cheap alternative. We cannot accept demands for professional services and the qualified people necessary without the appropriate levels of finance," she said.
