The Charity Commission has still to decide whether to launch another inquiry into the affairs of Interpal, following new allegations by British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) Panorama about funds being diverted to Hamas activities.
A spokesperson said: "The programme has raised a number of new issues. We will ask the BBC to share with us details of the evidence presented by the programme so that we can assess it. We will urgently review the appropriate next steps to take and intend to meet with the Interpal trustees to discuss our concerns and their response as soon as possible. Once we've assessed the information and the trustees' response, we will decide whether a new inquiry is required."
The Commission investigated the affairs of Interpal in both 1996 and 2003. In both instances it froze the charity's bank accounts to protect charity assets until the matter was resolved. In 1996, the Commission found no evidence to support allegations of misapplication of funds. A further inquiry following the US designation of Interpal as a specially designated global terrorist organisation in 2003 found no substantiating evidence to support the claims.
