Sign pre-nups for harmonious collaboration

Finance | 1 Sep 2006

New guidelines have been published by NCVO advising charities that collaborate with other organisations to sign pre-nuptial agreements.

The guidance for joint working agreements offers information and advice on developing agreements with parties within the voluntary and community sector, including information on why organisations should create joint working agreements and what to do should one of the parties wish to leave the partnership.

"Trust is essential for organisations working together successfully, but without a joint working agreement, partnerships can experience profound difficulties," said Gareth Coles, information officer at NCVO's Collaborative Working Unit (CWU). "Unless roles and responsibilities are defined, and accountabilities formally agreed, disputes can occur and organisations' assets may be at risk. Subsequent resolution of differences can be costly and time-consuming. A written joint working agreement can also be invaluable in ensuring continuity if things should change, for example if key staff or trustees leave."

According to Kate Aldous, also from CWU, having a formal agreement can also help organisations to add clarity and focus to their work, help them to review their partnership, and is useful if the partners decide to go their separate ways.
