New Sorp committee announced

Finance | Gareth Jones | 1 Dec 2006

The Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has announced the membership of the new Charities Sorp Committee. The expert committee exists to monitor, review and develop the effectiveness of the Statement of Recommended Practice as a tool for charity accounting and reporting.

For the first time, in a bid to achieve a more diverse committee with a broader view of the sector, the new members were recruited through open, external advertising, and include not only accounting experts but individuals with general sector experience.

Andrew Hind, chief executive of the Charity Commission and chair of the Sorp committee, said: "We have a committee that is now more representative of sector, professional and indeed wider interests than ever before. This diversity of experience will prove invaluable as we continue our work." Yet of the 17 members, just two, Debra Allcock Tyler and Tristan Lumley, do not have an accounting qualification.

Members of the committee are: Andrew Hind - chief executive, Charity Commission; Kirsty Gray - head of monitoring and investigation, OSCR; Ray Jones - head of accountancy policy, Charity Commission; Debra Allcock Tyler - chief executive, Directory of Social Change; Tidi Diyan - sole practitioner and council member of the Association of Charity Independent Examiners; Pesh Framjee - head of Deloittes non profit unit; Peter Gotham - partner, Gotham Erskine and chair of ICAEW's charities and voluntary sector special interest group; John Graham - finance director, NSPCC; Chris Harris - finance director, Action for Blind People; Keith Hickey - chief executive, Charity Finance Directors' Group; Professor Noel Hyndman - professor of management accounting, Queens University, Belfast; Tristan Lumley - senior research analyst at New Philanthropy Capital; Claire Newton - finance director, Marie Curie Cancer Care; Carol Rudge - partner, Grant Thornton; Kate Sayer - partner, Sayer Vincent; Catriona Scrimgeour - finance director, Bethany Christian Trust; and Paul Spokes - finance director, Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts.
