The Charity Commission has launched a consultation which proposes significant changes to the annual return for 2007, to improve the integrity of, and public access to, information on the register of charities. The changes will also aim to develop the Commission's risk-based approach to monitoring with a new serious incident reporting function.
All charities currently with an income of over £10,000 a year are required to complete an annual return and send it to the Commission each year. For 2007, it proposes that those with an income of between £10,000 and £500,000 provide essential information needed to update their entry on the online register of charities. Charities with income above £500,000 will be asked for financial data from their accounts. All charities with income above £25,000 will be asked to report serious incidents.
The Commission's chief executive, Andrew Hind (pictured), said: 'It's important we make the most of the interactive benefits technology offers to improve the quality of the information charities give us, and we will be encouraging all charities to complete their annual return online. This is an opportunity for charities rather than a threat.'
