Charity Commission chief executive Andrew Hind (pictured) has admitted that the Commission may have to stop doing some of the things it currently does, due to funding constraints.
The Commission is awaiting the outcome of the Treasury's Comprehensive Spending Review and is concerned that it will not receive all the funding it needs to carry out its extra duties in implementing parts of the Charities Act.
Speaking at the Commission's recent open board meeting, Hind said: 'There is a danger that public sector organisations become a victim of their own success. If you show efficiency and make savings the Treasury thinks you can repeat it. We may have to stop some of the things we do but we think everything we do is of high value. Therefore we will have to look at efficient ways of doing them, which may involve, for example, working with umbrella bodies.'
The Commission's board heard that it was almost 'bang on budget' in the current financial year with a projected overspend of only £36,000 on total budget of £30m for the year to 31 March 2007. Nick Allaway, executive director of charity information and corporate services, added that it was working to improve its forecasting information to meet the challenge of future funding difficulties.
