Charities could be missing out on £80 million gifts in kind

UK companies could be dumping up to £80 million of surplus goods in landfill sites that they could instead donate to charity as gifts in kind. A survey of UK businesses commissioned by In Kind Direct found that £1.37 billion of surplus and obsolete consumer goods go to waste each year.

Commission updates trading guidance

The Charity Commission has published revised guidance on trading (CC35) to help charities avoid the potential risks of trading and get the most out of their trading activities, while also complying with their legal and fiscal requirements. Trustees, trade and tax -  how charities may lawfully trade is at www.charitycommission.gov.uk.

Impetus links with Fairtrade

The Impetus Trust has announced it is investing in and forming a partnership with The Fairtrade Foundation, bringing the number of charities in its portfolio to eight. Impetus is assisting it with its strategic planning process over the next 16 months with a view to making a longer-term investment.

CAF launches ethical guide

CAF is launching a free ethical investment guide for charities. Published in partnership with F&C Asset Management, the guide details the socially responsible investment options available to charities, discusses the risks involved and looks at how charities can influence the investment world.

Northern Ireland Charity Commission put on hold

The formation of a Northern Ireland Charity Commission has been delayed by a year following the restoration of devolution. The draft Charities (NI) Order 2007 was due to go through Westminster this summer but will now be considered for referral to the Northern Ireland Assembly, with the body unlikely to be established until mid-2008. Northern Ireland remains the last unregulated charity sector in the UK, where charities are able to apply to HM Revenue & Customs for tax breaks but there is no formal registration process.
