GamCare secures three-year funding deal to run gambling helpline

Finance | Tania Mason | 11 Oct 2011

Gambling support charity GamCare has secured new funding from the gambling industry to run a national helpline and provide treatment services for gamblers and others affected by the problem.

After nearly two years of uncertainty about its future, GamCare has finally signed a funding deal with the Great Foundation, the body that fundraises from the industry to pay for research, education and treatment of problem gambling.

The helpline grant will run for three years from 1 October 2011 to 30 September 2014, and will include piloting a new freephone service from 1 April 2012.

Funding for treatment services will last just six months up until 31 March next year.

In return for the funding, the contract requires that GamCare provides clear evidence of the impact of its work.

Marc W Etches, chief executive of the Great Foundation, said: “The grant agreements are demanding of GamCare in terms of future competitiveness, particularly in relation to transparency of performance, evaluation of outcomes, demonstration of value for money, and commitment to continuous service improvement.”

Outcome measurement is particularly demanding in relation to the new helpline.  Etches added: “A national gambling helpline is an important element of the support infrastructure for those that experience problems with their gambling.

“However, it is equally important that the industry that volunteers to fund it should be satisfied that its donation are spent wisely, deliver value for money and maximise effective outcomes for those who require care and support.”

Andy McLellan, GamCare CEO, said: “We are looking forward to working with Great in a spirit of renewed partnership to ensure the continued improvement and expansion of the service whilst also providing excellent value for money.

“GamCare welcomes the challenges Great has set in terms of our continuing competitiveness and is committed to the delivery of both excellent quality of services and outstanding value for money.  We are confident we will exceed all expectations.”
