Mike Penrose

Mike Penrose is a former humanitarian adviser to DfID and spent 12 years as an aid worker. He was kidnapped in 1996 in Chechnya whilst working for a French aid group. Penrose is now a regional director for International SOS, working on crisis and risk management issues.

Mike Penrose assesses the changing face of global risk in a world where international aid workers are increasingly funding themselves in the line of ï¬re. It is inherent in the nature of their work that charities and other NGOs engaged in humanitarian and development activity have always operated in challenging, even hazardous environments. Yet, changes in how such organisations are perceived, at home and among the communities they seek to help, continue to place an ever-greater strain on the balance between worker safety and effective delivery.
