Andrew Small is a commercial property solicitor at Stone King Sewell. He joined the firm in 2008 having worked previously at Bircham Dyson Bell (where he qualified in 2002) and Bates Wells & Braithwaite.
Small specialises in work for charity and education clients and his experience includes work on mergers and hive-offs, maintained school and academy-related work, as well as a focus on social enterprise.

Andrew Small offers guidance for when a developer knocks on the door. Charities that are sitting on apparently surplus land, eg. schools or residential care homes with large grounds, are likely to find that they receive regular unsolicited approaches from third parties looking to buy it, often before they have taken any decision to put the property on the market.
The creation of a pot of money for works of community benefit may turn out to be an effective source of funding, but charities should not be putting anything into that pot when developing their own land for their own objects
