Roger Chester

Head of Finance and Administration, LionHeart

Roger has worked in the NFP sector since 1975. His first experience of a computer was when the local authority audit section did the conga through the computer room at a Christmas party.

He has been head of finance and administration at LionHeart since 2002. His first contact with Charity Finance was when he rigged its business card draw at the Charity Accountants Conference. Ever mindful of the state of the planet he thinks that the best computer was the abacus as it relied on a biological power supply rather than an electrical one.

In 2011 he became a special advisor to the Al-Mizan Charitable Trust. He is also the current chairman of the finance and legal group at the Association of Charity Officers and at the start of 2012 he was appointed as a trustee for the Charity Employees Benevolent Fund.

Heart of the problem

Roger Chester shares his experience of how LionHeart is dealing with the downturn. Lionheart is an occupational benevolent fund working for members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. We have an income of £1.6m, 11 staff and 200 vol-unteers. We help our beneficiaries by talking to them, making grants and in some cases lending them money. To set the scene, at 1 Jan 2008 we were worth £13m and today £9m. We rely on members of the RICS and property firms for our income. The property industry has been hit very hard and each day we are receiving more enquiries from RICS members who expect to be made redundant asking if LionHeart can help them.
