The Centre of Giving and Philanthropy (CGAP) at Cass Business School is the first dedicated research facility to focus on building a better understanding of charitable giving and philanthropy for donors, charities and policy-makers.
It brings together the expertise of NCVO and research teams in five universities.

The Centre was launched on 1 October 2008 and has two co-directors, Professor Jenny Harrow and Professor Cathy Pharoah. It is chaired by Professor Nicholas Deakin.

They aim to promote high quality research on philanthropy and giving, train new researchers and work internationally in a multi-disciplinary way.
The members of the Centre are dedicated to researching and sharing knowledge on giving and philanthropy today, with partners leading on different areas of the programme:

  • Individual and corporate giving – University of Strathclyde
  • Charity and social redistribution – Universities of Kent and Southampton
  • Institutions of philanthropy and giving data – Cass Business School and University of Edinburgh
  • Knowledge-sharing and dissemination – Cass Business School, University of Edinburgh and NCVO

The Centre has been jointly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Office of the Third Sector, Carnegie UK Trust and Scottish government. Together they will provide a total of £2.2m over five years.
