Raising awareness of the dangers of diabetes

Some 850,000 people in the UK have diabetes and do not know it, yet if left untreated it can lead to fatal complications such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Furthermore, diabetes costs the NHS £1m every hour. Raising awareness therefore plays a key part in Diabetes UK’s work, and the charity is recognised here for the success of the Measure Up Roadshow in 2009/2010.

The charity had determined from past experience and research that roadshows were the best way to spread the message and reach the communities most in need. To be specifically targeted were black, Asian and minority ethnic communities (BAME), as they tend to have a higher prevalence of diabetes and are harder to reach with healthcare messages.

With funding of £1m from the HBOS Foundation, the charity implemented new diabetes risk assessments, increased the number of shows it was running from a maximum of 20 a year to a maximum of 110, purchased three mobile exhibition units, brought the logistics and event management aspects in-house, delegated the day-to-day running of the shows to regional and national offices and made extensive use of volunteers.

The project was a great success. It saw 189 hard-to-reach locations visited for an average of two days a year each; 15,168 diabetes risk assessments carried out; 7,011 people referred to their GP for further information; 148,271 pieces of information distributed and 400 press articles written. Meanwhile, 20 per cent of those assessed were from BAME communities, higher than the proportion of BAME individuals in the UK population.
