Rejuvenating an Essex ‘problem space’

The Land Trust is an independent charitable trust that manages public green spaces such as country parks, wetlands, community woodlands and ecology parks.

The 16-hectare Langdon Lake and Meadow in Basildon, Essex, had been long neglected and become something of a trouble spot, a site of illegal fishing, dirt bike racing, littering and vandalism. Some members of the community decided that enough was enough and highlighted the problem to the local authority, aided by Paralympic gold medal athlete and Langdon user Danny Crates.

The Land Trust secured a £1m grant from the Department for Communities and Local Government, and joined up with Essex Wildlife Trust to use its local connections to actively engage with the local community at all stages to redevelop the space. Activity involved physical improvements such as clearing shrubs, securing fences and adding picnic benches as well as the development of a mediated fishing syndicate and engaging volunteer wardens to patrol the site. Since the project began three years ago, Langdon Lake and Meadow has become a safe and welcoming space, now home to educational school trips, organised health activities and community events.

The scheme has a long-term focus that includes a five-year management plan, agreed after in-depth discussions with stakeholders, and a sustainable funding model that ensures that the investment in Langdon Lake and Meadow will be safeguarded into the future.
